Haider Ackermann

Haider Ackermann, The Draping Genius. I have posted my admiration of his work before, but I must repeat my praise after seeing the Spring Summer 2012 collection. UNBELIEVABLE how he manipulates silks, jerseys, even leather into a buttery waterfall!!!! He uses color like a master artist of an era long ago, combines angles like a trusted architect. Oh my, Haider!

The sultry tones of Haider Ackermann’s Spring / Summer 2012 collection had the audience of Paris salivating for more.

The Columbian born designer, whom Karl Lagerfeld has said he wants him to be his successor at Chanel, got his big break interning with John Galliano. He then went onto win the esteemed Swiss Textiles Award, and launched his first, and last menswear line in 2010. It is these experiences, which have given him the great skill of tailoring and draping jersey, suede and leather.

Beautiful tapered trousers, silk jumpsuits, and an abundance of silver lame; his ambiguously gendered approach to a sexual collection is a fine example of his design repertoire.

Mixing his palette with bilberry, reds, gold’s and distressed silvers; Ackermann has proved his hype with this glamorous collection. The theme of sultry beauty and edgy tailoring, complimented the Parisian setting.

Masculine tailoring and feminine, sheer fabrics dominated the show and the clean lines were typical of Ackermann’s earlier designs.

Oh, Gabrielle!

A girl should be two things…classy and fabulous. – Chanel

Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel to a poor family in Saumur, France on August 19, 1883. Her childhood was troubled as her mother died young and her father deserted her and her siblings. Yet, she rose to become the pioneer of sportswear and the most famous fashion designer in history. She learned to sew from her mother and from the nuns at the Catholic orphanage where her father left her. At the age of 18 she left the orphanage and worked as a cabaret singer. During this time, Chanel performed in the bars of Moulin and Vichy. She was called “Coco.” Some say that the name comes from one of the songs she used to sing. Chanel said that it meant “kept woman”. It was during these performances that she became acquainted with Arthur “Boy” Capel. He is believed to be Chanel’s great love (however, Chanel enjoyed changing her story with each and every interview ever granted)Boy financed her original millinery storefront which opened in 1909. Chanel added clothing in 1913.

She changed the world. She freed the woman and purported fashion into what it is today.

After the war (I), times were challenging economically and socially in France (as well as the world over) many lost their fortunes due to the troubled times. Chanel was quick to  introduce the leisure suit for women out of jersey; a fabric that had only previously been used for underwear and workers’ uniforms. For years she had rebelled against how clothing was a prison for women, painful and serving only for the men’s taste and how they wanted a woman to look. She embraced her opportunity for making a change and she did it extraordinarily!

She gave women an opportunity to enjoy fashion and use fashion for personal expression in a comfortable means. She introduced pants and bathing suits for women.

Note:  There was a law that stated a woman could not wear a bathing suit (or skirt) that was more than 6″ above the knee. Many women were arrested for this heinous crime.

Chanel took a sabbatical from designing during the years of 1939-1954. Unfortunately, during WWII, Chanel took up with the Germans and became involved with espionage and a handsome officer of the Nazi’s, whom protected her during the war. She returned to the fashion scene in 1954 but her new collection did not have much success with the Parisians because of her relationship with the Nazi’s. However, The British and Americans did embrace her and became her faithful customers.

In 1971, Chanel being 87 years old, was an ailing old woman yet continued to practice her schedule of overseeing the designing and preparation of her spring collection. On Sunday, January 10, she went for a long drive and went to bed early. She died that night at her Ritz apartment in Paris.

In order to be IRREPLACEABLE  one must be DIFFERENT. – Chanel
