Paper Dolls

According to Wikipedia.com, paper dresses were invented by the Scott Paper Company in 1966 as a marketing tool. For one dollar, women could buy the dress and also receive coupons for Scott paper products. Imagine their surprise when over half a million women ordered these dresses in under a year!

I’m not sure I would be comfortable, or trusting, to wear a paper dress out for an evening. What if I spilled my wine, or worse yet, brushed by a candle a bit too close? What if I wanted to sit down? What should I do if I need to go to the potty? But credit to The Scott Paper Company for an ingenious marketing idea and amazing credit to these featured artisans who’ve created some amazing fashions from an improbable material.

A Flower Forever

This is such a fun project! I promise it is not hard and you don’t even HAVE to use the templates which are recommended…I have confidence that you can draw out your own petal shapes and even better…design your OWN special flower shape!!!! ENJOY ! & get ready for SPRING!!!!!

Materials (to make one giant rose):
• 1 Roll of floral tape
• 6 18-gauge floral stem wire
• 4 sheets of Doublette crepe paper for petals
• 1 sheet of Doublette crepe paper in green for leaves, calyx, stem
• 1 round pencil
• Craft Glue
• Crepe paper templates (download from Martha Stewart)
• 3 copies of teardrop template
• 8 copies of the heart-shaped template
• 2 copies of the leaf template
• 1 copy of the calyx template

Step 1: Cut the petals

Cut 5-6 teardrop petals and 15-6 heart-shaped petals from the petal colored crepe paper.

VERY IMPORTANT: Crepe paper is directional so it matters which way you’re cutting the paper. Make sure the grain is vertical when you’re cutting the flower pieces.

Stack 2 pieces of crepe paper on top of each other then place 1 copy of template over the crepe paper and staple. I don’t recommend cutting more than 2 layers of crepe paper at a time since the edges won’t be cut as cleanly.

Repeat until all of your petals are cut

Step 2: Cut the leaves + calyx

Cut 3 leaves and 1 calyx from the green crepe paper.

Step 3: Make the rose stem

Take 3 pieces of stem wire and wrap in floral tape.

Step 4: Shape the petals

With both hands, pull from the center of the petal outward. This will create a cupping of the paper (which is what gives it the petal-like quality)

Turn petal over and use the round pencil to curl the top of the petal.

Step 5: Create the rose bud – the inner part of the rose

Take one teardrop shaped petal and wrap around the taped floral wire from Step 3. Use more floral tape to secure. Repeat working your way around the floral wire until all of the teardrop shaped petals are use.

Step 6: Make the rose bloom –the outer part of the rose

Take one heart-shaped petal and wrap around the rose bud, secure with floral tape. Repeat until all petals have been used.

Step 7: Make the leaf-stems

Take 3 loose pieces of floral wire and using craft glue, wrap each one with green crepe paper. Take one leaf and 1 crepe paper wrapped floral wire from step 10 and glue together. Repeat 2 more times.

Step 8: Add calyx to rose

Wrap the calyx around the base of the rose bloom and secure with floral tape.

Cover the floral tape area with more crepe paper.

Step 9: Add leaf-stems to rose

Using craft glue, secure each of the 3 leaf-stems to the rose stem. I found it helpful to use binder clips to hold the stems together while the glue was drying.

Step 10: Enjoy your FLOWER FOREVER!

I don’t really know what inspired me to paint this…but anyway..I introduce you to “Muriel The Mermaid”. I see many mistakes..but I guess for my first Meer Creature she’ll suffice. If you had the challenge to paint something from the sea…what would it be? Please SHARE!

Ghoul Juice Project

This is just a cute idea I wanted to share with you. For Halloween night these little bottles will add a “ghastly” note to your kitchen or decor and the kids will think they are superbly “gross”. Below are the supplies and photo instructions. After you’ve prepared the bottles and your ready for some scary action..fill each bottle about 1/4 full of room temp water and drop in some dry ice pellets (available at grocery stores) and watch the potion rise. Scary On!

Supplies:

  1. Pack of ready made labels from Michael’s, (I got the pack shown for $3 using my 40% off coupon).
  2. 3 clear glass bottles, (got mine at a thrift store for .50¢ each).
  3. Brown, green, and black acrylic paint.
  4. Paint brush, fine grit sand paper, clear varnish.
  5. Dry ice and room temp water.

Halloween Treats

Yep, I have boyz in the house! Tell me one kid that doesn’t break out in a giggle when someone mentions “poop”, “doo-doo”, “snot”, and “fart”…!? I rest my case. Even though MY boyz are too big for treat bags I just had to share my treat bag idea with you all. Maybe the parents and teachers won’t love you so much…but the kids will ALWAYS remember you for this! Be brave this Halloween and eat some Spider Snot, or some Bat DooDoo, or better yet..some Ghost Poo! I dare ‘ya!

Masked Nightingale

Nothing is more sexy and alluring than a mask. I wish we still had Masquerade Balls like in Mozart‘s day. How much fun would it be to design and make your own mask and costume or hire someone like Tom Banwell to master a design just for you! (www.etsy.com/shop/TomBanwell)

Why not consider hosting a Masquerade Ball this year and enliven an age-old and super sexy party idea! Happy Masquerading!
