GOLD AND SILVER

It’s December. Holiday time. What comes to mind when you think of these facts? Let’s start with COLOR. Red. Green. GOLD AND SILVER  (this is part 3 of 3 part series):

GOLD AND SILVER:

SILVER is a metal AG (latin for Argentum which means grey/silvery). This metal is often known as a symbol for “light, purity, joy and glory”. Silver is a glistening tribute to the winter season; think of snow glistening in the sunlight as it appears to be silvery, almost diamond like. Silver has long been used as a world currency, but did you know that silver can kill bacteria? It was used to disinfect water and purify food for storage back in the middle ages.

GOLD is also a metal Au (latin for Aurum which means gold). This metal is often known as a symbol for “sun, perfection, prosperity”. Gold was one of the three gifts the Kings from The East brought to honor baby Jesus:  goldfrankincense and myrrh. Gold has long been the basis for world currency. But, did you know that gold is edible? In olden times many kings entertained guests with elaborate food fare dusted with gold dust or gold flakes to show his wealth and kingship. Even today one can drink “Goldwasser” which is a traditional German herbal liqueur produced in Schwabach, Germany. All over the world there exists expensive cocktails with gold leaf (about $1k a drink). Gold is inert to body chemistry, has no taste and leaves the body unaltered.

GOLD and SILVER are beautiful metallic colors. They are beautiful in FASHION and they are beautiful in DECORATION. They are beautiful all over and nice in your pocket.

Go GOLD AND SILVER.

Don’t throw away your PUMPKINS!

Make some PUMPKIN SOUP!!!!!!

INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons curry powder
15 oz. pumpkin puree (dig out the goods (no seeds) and put em in a processor or blender)
2 cups vegetable broth
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup pecan pieces
1 (14-ounce) can unsweetened coconut milk

PREPARATION
1. Preheat the oven to 375° F. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion. Cover and cook until softened, 5 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon of the curry powder and the pumpkin puree, then whisk in the broth until smooth. Add 2 tablespoons of the maple syrup and season to taste with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes to allow flavors to develop, stirring occasionally.

2. While the soup is simmering, make the curried pecans. In a small bowl, combine the pecan pieces with the remaining maple syrup and toss to coat. Sprinkle with the remaining curry powder, tossing to coat. Place the pecans in a small baking dish and bake until toasted, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

3. Meanwhile, use an immersion blender to puree the soup right in the pot. Otherwise, transfer the soup to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Stir back into the pot. Return the soup to the stovetop, turning the heat to low. Whisk in the coconut milk, taste to adjust seasonings. Heat until hot, do not boil. Serve the soup garnished with the pecans.

Potatoes, Toothpaste, and Tea

Khamillion is a blog about VARIETY. Today I’m sharing a dish, a tea, and a cleaning secret.

IRON GUNK: If you love FASHION you know what an iron is. You also know the agony of ironing a white piece and some funky rust colored gunk from your iron stains your crisp whitey and it has to go back in the dirty bin!  *#%@ = Go get vinegar, toothpaste, and a ‘lil towel.

  • Assuming your iron is a steam iron…fill the chamber with vinegar and steam for 4 min. You might ease it over a damp cloth during this time to help loosen the gunk in the holes. After 4 min. unplug and let cool. Rinse out the chamber, wipe off bottom with warm damp towel until it wipes clean.
  • Take your toothpaste and a warm damp towel. Apply a bit of toothpaste to towel and wipe in little circles to clean (and shine) your iron. (This is good fun for you clean fanatics).

Annie Get Your Gun Salad: Did you know potatoes produce great energy and help fight against colon cancer? Did you know avocados are an excellent source of protein and “good fat” which lowers cholesterol and is being researched for cancer prevention? Did you know watercress is high in iron, Vit A and C and calcium? It also helps fight against lung cancer. So, if you eat this salad you might jump tall buildings with a single leap! (don’t actually try this)

  • 1 large ripe (a little soft) avocado
  • 1.5lb new potatoes (the small ones)
  • watercress
  • olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • salt and pepper
  1. Boil your potatoes until fork punctures through easily. Drain and slice in half.
  2. Peel and slice avocado in lengths.
  3. Throw the potatoes on a plate and then place the avocado around..scatter the watercress on top.
  4. Drizzle olive oil over all and squeeze a small amount of lemon.

Flee Flu: I hate to be sick. I hate the flu…it makes you feel like a louse and a loser. Keep this mixture in your pantry and fight! fight! fight!

  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh yarrow flowers
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup boiling water

Boil the water. While waiting for the water to boil, combine yarrow and cinnamon in a cup. Pour the boiling water over the mixture and let steep for 7 min. Strain and drink. You may drink up to 3 cups per day (without turning yarrow). That was a joke.
