Hot August

A gaseous cloud of heat hovers over the pavement. The leaves of the trees are wilted and tired by each days end. Grass nettles are tipped with a scorched brown tint and the children have parked their bicycles for favor of the air conditioned comfort of video games. It’s August and it is HOT. What can one wear to afford some sort of cool comfort?

Say goodbye to the little black dress in favor of the little white dress. As we all know, white reflects and black absorbs.

Umbrellas are not just for the rain. If out between 11am – 3pm shield yourself from the high glare of the sun with a light colored sunbrella.

For your skin; the repetitive chirps of wearing sunscreen is music to your dreams of ‘aging well’.

Beat the heat with these suggestions:

Drink lots of water, refresh yourself with Evian facial mist and cool your insides by eating succulent fruits.

Be Cool. Be Healthy. Be Happy.

Pet Respect

My pets have always been my sunshine on a crappy day. The welcome home from an office filled with demands and people I didn’t really like. My alarm clock of cheeky kisses instead of a blaring beep to pierce the wonderful early morning silence. Hugs when a partner cracked my heart. They filled my life with that something something that we often feel is missing.

Oftentimes I feel guilt about how I have treated my past pets. The dog I left behind to go to college. The horse I sold to buy a car and date boys. The fish I neglected until it died. The dog I sold to move overseas.

Our pets are more than fixtures for our homes, more than something to own; they are FAMILY. We are their WORLD. Give them the love and respect they deserve and be their LIFE PARTNER. Owning a pet is a big responsibility…so don’t own one unless you can be responsible for it. And most of all…be the sunshine in HIS/HER day sometimes. . .

my MAMMA said…

My Mamma Always Told Me….

A few TIPS  you may have NEVER heard;

For a throbbing headache cut a lime in half and rub it on your forehead. . . throbbing goes away.

If you spray a lightbulb with a bit of perfume the room smells great!

A splinter can often more easily be removed by placing a strip of scotch tape over it and lifting it off.

Alka Seltzer cleans toilets (2 tablets + 20 minutes).

I TOLD you they were unusual…but they seriously WORK!

Thank You Mamma.

Compassion is a DRUG

Did you know that next week is the “Random Acts of Kindness” week? Yep, it is. Tie a ribbon, wear a ribbon, whatever works to remind you to do something extra ordinary for someone else next week. Really, we should do this daily, especially since it has been proven that compassion expressed releases specific endorphins that are equivalent to a drug response…a sort of “high”, if you will. Wow! Have you every noticed how good you feel when you do something nice for someone else? You get a really great feeling inside don’t you? Well, there it is.

Visit http://www.randomactsofkindness.org if you need some ideas…but I bet you can come up with some all by yourself!

Show some love.

Replacement Habit

It’s a new year, a new month, a new day. I’m not interested in posting a new year’s resolution diorama. Resolutions are made to instill pressure and guilt. I prefer to think of resolutions as a new path, a new way to BE, a BETTER way to journey.

No matter the change, the idea is to not give yourself a time limit (this makes you anxious) and not to regulate a journal (this makes you depressed AND anxious). Just ease into your new habits…replacing the ones that made you want to change with habits you want to keep. We are creatures of habit. We are also pack driven, no not the six pack, the peeps’ pack. Humans tend to emulate those around them.

I’m not saying you should dump your buddies…but if you are trying to make a serious change in your life, for example let’s say you want to eat healthier and lose weight (most popular “New Years Resolution”) it could be helpful not to hang out with the McDonald’s frequent flyers. Change is hard. I know. I have made a major change with this new year and I can say this method is working brilliantly. I have replaced the bad with the good. I have developed a replacement habit. I stay away from my pressure points and when I get tempted I have a visual diversion to keep me grounded and strong.

No, it’s not new age, it’s training the mind. Our mind is tricky and clever and you must be cunning. Perhaps it could be likened to a chess game. Just remember, if you lose the first set there is always a new game you can start. Be dedicated for a win.

Whatever your goals and wishes are for change, I truly wish for your success. It is not easy but it CAN be done. Day by day, … realize the need, resolve the reason, replace the habit.

I would like to share with you one of my favorite quotes:

ALL THAT WE ARE IS A RESULT OF WHAT WE HAVE THOUGHT. THE MIND IS EVERYTHING. WHAT WE THINK WE BECOME.  - Buddha

Still Your Mind

MEDITATION is the practice of clearing the mind, allowing it to become RELAXED and inwardly FOCUSED. Meditation relieves you of your external environment and stress/worries. It allows you to cultivate an inner state that is one-pointed and still. Your mind and your body slip into a smooth RELEASE and the mind falls silent. The practice of meditation is age-old and in over 1,000 published research studies, various methods of meditation have been linked to changes in metabolism, blood pressure, brain activation, and other bodily processes especially as a method of stress and pain reduction.

I am relatively new to meditating and at first it was very difficult to sit still, to find a comfortable position, to prohibit my bouncing mind from wandering (a continual difficulty) but I’m making progress and I am definitely feeling more centered and in control of my habits, stress points, and negative tendencies.

Many people in the west mistakenly point to meditating as a form of Buddhist worship. This is simply an erroneous judgement that one should consider gaining wisdom about before they remark a falsehood. Meditation is a broad and encompassing subject to learn about and when one is interested in going deeper into understanding life and WHY and WHAT and HOW, then this subject is well worth your research. Your life will change. I promise.

JOSHUA 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth but you shall meditate day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous and have good success.
