When My Ship Comes In….

Yesterday

For many the thought of their dying moment is a thought they rather not ponder. What is beyond what we know? Where does the person whom we knew so well with the personality, the gregarious laughter, the intimate tears, the maddening stubbornness, and the eyes of familiarity and comfort… where does that person gravitate? Is the answer within the simple biblical verse of ‘full knowledge knows no man for this knowledge is too great for man to accept‘? Often I have begged the Almighty..”Try me. Please, Lord, Try me”.

Kahlil Gibran was a typical Lebanese kid born to a poor family in the town of Bsharri. He rose to become one of the world’s most prophetic ‘inspirational fiction’ writers of this era. He was a gifted painter and sketch artist. When his father was arrested for gambling debts his mother moved with Kahlil and his siblings to Boston. Kahlil was a lover to Mary Haskall. Mary supported Kahlil through his growth in the arts but they were never able to be in matrimony due to her family’s conservative stupidity. His biography is really not that impressive. He was minimally educated and grew up in the typical teachings of Maronite Christianity. May I recommend you read some his stories? Kahlil Gibran may have led an ordinary immigrants life but make no mistake… he left this world a treasure.

The Prophet -by Kahlil Gibran

exert: For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from it restless tides so that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Of Gibran Claude Bragdon writes: “His power came from some great reservoir of spiritual life else it could not have been so universal and so potent, but the majesty and beauty of the language with which he clothed it were all his own.” – Claude Bragdon

On his tombstone he had written:
” I am alive like you, and I am standing beside you. Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you.” -KG

Some seek wealth, fame, and ownership and are confused when they at last discover they are not happy. They ask themselves why? What did I miss? I expected all of this to be fulfilling ….

“People who have earthly wealth have nothing without the riches of God. They can take nothing material with them when they die. But those who have cultivated good qualities are the truly rich, they carry that treasure beyond the portals of the grave.”-Yogananda

In Ecclesiastes it reads- “Naked is a man when he comes from his mothers womb. As he comes so shall he depart.”

Cultivate goodness and show God’s love in your actions. Then when others wonder ‘what they missed’ they will perhaps ask…”what makes YOU so happy?”

Lessons from the ‘Furries’…

They don’t know prejudice unless we teach them what it is.

They don’t know fear unless we teach them to be afraid.

They don’t know limitations unless we box them in.

Today, let’s take a few lessons from the ‘Furries’ of the world;                                                                  Forgive others’ mistakes, show love and happiness, and accept those who look/act different from you.

Perfection

Isn’t God amazing? Look at the artistry in His creations. Listen to what they say. In nature is uniformity, originality, perfect law, perfect peace, and indescribable beauty. All one must do is notice it.

Pet Respect

My pets have always been my sunshine on a crappy day. The welcome home from an office filled with demands and people I didn’t really like. My alarm clock of cheeky kisses instead of a blaring beep to pierce the wonderful early morning silence. Hugs when a partner cracked my heart. They filled my life with that something something that we often feel is missing.

Oftentimes I feel guilt about how I have treated my past pets. The dog I left behind to go to college. The horse I sold to buy a car and date boys. The fish I neglected until it died. The dog I sold to move overseas.

Our pets are more than fixtures for our homes, more than something to own; they are FAMILY. We are their WORLD. Give them the love and respect they deserve and be their LIFE PARTNER. Owning a pet is a big responsibility…so don’t own one unless you can be responsible for it. And most of all…be the sunshine in HIS/HER day sometimes. . .

The Reign of REINDEER

Where did RUDOLPH come from anyway?

A clerk at Montgomery Ward (a past successful department store chain) Robert L. May came up with a poem to entertain the kids during the holiday season and drive more business to the store. Robert named the poem “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer“. 2.5 million copies went home with Wards shoppers that Christmas back in 1939 and in 1946 May republished the poem as a children’s book and history was made. Robert May’s poem turned book became one of the most beloved Christmas tales of all time.

We all have our Christmas traditions. Often times, we don’t even know why or where these traditions came from. The reindeer is a special breed that lives in very cold climates. Perhaps Robert May was doing some research and discovered this rare creature and unknowingly made an incredibly adorable mascot for Christmas.
What have we done with the Rudolph and the REINDEER?
Well, my friends, it’s not always pretty, but it is certainly entertaining. There is an annual charity event held in the UK (of course) in a town called Tenby on Boxing Day (day after Christmas). These brave souls take a NAKED dip in FREEZING WATER dressed as REINDEER.I’m not sure what charity they are raising money for, but I can offer some guesses; maybe “Clothe the World”? or, “The Mental Illness Society”?
At Christmas we love to dress things up as REINDEER; our dogs, children, even our cars.
We decorate our homes and our yards with REINDEER.
But, are REINDEER real?
Yes! They are REAL!!! Reindeer are actual living creatures that live in Northern Asia, Europe, Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland. In the Sakha Republic of eastern Siberia, there are five groups of nomads who still make a living as reindeer herders. The talented photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva tells that every year reindeer herders have a celebration called “Meeting of the Sun.” It happens in the end of February. … When the first bright orange disc of the sun starts to show itself after a long polar night, they gather in a village for celebration. This is one of the rare opportunities for nomads to meet friends and relatives, as they migrate all year long far away from each other. Imagine one day the village is filled with reindeer sleds and people in native clothing. They sing, dance, put their tipis on the lake, constructing a magical tipi town. Men organize reindeer racing, women show their best embroidery and sewing.

The REINDEER are so beautiful and a devoted creature, yet there are some heartless fools that take sport in hunting REINDEER to hang their beautiful heads above their fireplace.

So this Christmas, when you are decorating, dressing, reading traditional stories,…think of how often we  maintain a tradition without REALLY learning why and take the time to consider it’s history. Think of the images that come to mind with the season and ask yourself “Do I know why this is part of my celebration”? You might find some interesting and new information.
